Domain Authority is a score developed by Moz. It describes the relevance of the website for a specific subject area. This relevance has a direct impact on search engine ranking.
Moz calculates Domain Authority by evaluating different factors into a single score that can be used for tracking the ranking strength of a domain over time.
Domain Authority has no effect on SERP because it’s not a Google ranking factor.
4 Dimensions of Domain Authority
Searching algorithms asses domain authority through four dimensions:
- prestige of the website
- quality of the content
- novelty of the information
- competitiveness around the subject
Where Can I Find Domain Authority for My Website?
There are multiple services that calculate Domain Authority metrics but Semrush is probably the most straightforward of them.
It offers a complete suite of SEO tools including keyword research, SEO audits and domain analytics.
Semrush uses its own compound metric called Authority Score that’s used for measuring the overall quality and SEO performance and ranges from 0 to 100.
The highest number means the strongest Authority Score of the website.
Once you sign up for trial, you can check Authority Score for any website.
That’s how I found out that the Autority Score for this website is 41 out of 100 which is pretty good considering the amount of content I managed to publish so far.
How Semrush Calculates the Authority Score?
Semrush uses a neural network and machine learning to calculate the Authority Score in these two steps:
- Machine-learning algorithm determines popularity and trustworthiness of any given website by organic search, traffic and backlink data
- Google-like algorithm watches how specific websites gain links
Once a month, Semrush updates Authority Scores for all domains but there are only a few that gets the highest scores in 90s range.
What Website Has the Highest Authority Score?
Semrush rates almost 60 million websites from 1 – 100 and these are currently the websites with the highest Authority Score:
What is Considered a Good Authority Score?
There’s no straightforward answer to this question. Semrush explains on its blog that you should judge website’s Authority Score in relation to similar websites in the same niche.
This means that the Authority Score should not be used for determining how good or bad websites are on an absolute scale.
With that said, anything above 50 is a very good result while a score of 0 means that a domain is the weakest.
Lower Authority Score does not necessarily mean that there’s something inherently wrong with the website.
For example, low-key niches tend to have lower average Authority Scores while highly competitive websites see higher average Authority Scores.
How Can I Improve the Authority Score of My Website?
Since the Authority Score aggregates multiple pieces of data, it’s not easy to influence it directly.
It is meant to predict the competitiveness of a specific website regarding Google search results and that’s why it incorporates similar complexity of ranking factors that Google is using.
The best way to improve the Authority Score of your website is to improve its overall SEO health and to focus on the quality of the content and backlinks.
To improve the Authority Score, Semrush recommends these strategies:
- Create and share quality content
- Conduct outreach and ask websites for a link
- Get added to directories and indexes that list websites in your niche
- Ask for inclusion in best-of articles in your niche
- Find broken links and ask the owner to link to your content instead
- Remove any toxic backlinks

Once you’re inside the dashboard, I recommend checking these features:
- Keyword Research

- SEO Content Template
Keyword research will give you an in-dept analysis of any given keyword, like search volume for specific country, difficulty, variations and related keywords.
Keyword Difficulty is especially important metric as it tells you how many referring domains your content needs to start ranking for a specific keyword.
At the image below, you can see that it’s quite hard to rank for “wordpress speed” keyword and you would need 93 high-authority domains referring to your content that must be well-optimized.
Site audit will crawl your content for any errors, warnings and other things worth considering.
It will show you the overall health of your website including the number of broken links and other issues.
