What is a Shared Hosting?

A shared hosting service is a web hosting where many websites share the same web server connected to the Internet.

This is generally the most budget-friendly option for hosting because the overall cost of server maintenance is spread over many customers.

A shared hosting is also one of the most popular forms of hosting service for starting bloggers because it’s very affordable and you don’t have to pay fortune to get your brand-new website online.

As your blog grows, you will eventually switch to premium hosting services that have some undisputed advantages over shared hosting, but for beginners, a reasonable shared hosting is the best option.

Advantages of Shared Hosting

If you’re just thinking about starting your new blog, then shared hosting is the best option for you as it provides affordable services to power your website on a budget.

Here are the most important advantages of a shared hosting:

  1. Pricing. Sharing resources with other websites also means sharing the cost. That’s why shared hosting plans are very affordable.
  2. User-friendliness. You don’t need any technical skills because all hosting plans that I will suggest in this article offer user-friendly dashboard and control panel. So, you can quickly manage your website with just a few mouse clicks.
  3. Scalability. Once your blog become more popular and resource-demanding, you can easily choose better plan with more performance. Most hosting providers offer multiple plans and it’s very easy to upgrade them.

Disadvantages of Shared Hosting

When it comes to disadvantages, here are the most important limitations worth considering:

  1. Speed. Since resources are being shared, it’s no wonder that servers have lower speeds and overall performance, especially when compared to dedicated servers or managed hosting plans
  2. Customization. Shared hosting doesn’t come with support that would tailor the plan for unique requirements and specific needs.
  3. Resources. Bandwidth and storage depend on the overall server usage and fair usage policy.

Now that you know what to expect and understand the basic pros and cons of shared hosting, let’s take a look at the best shared hosting plans you can today.

1. DreamHost: $2.59/mo

DreamHost’s Shared Plans

Thanks to DreamHost, starting a blog doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby. DreamHost is one of the most affordable and quality hosting providers.

For a 3-year contract, DreamHost offers a very robust set of features. That’s the main reason why it managed to attract so many bloggers and website owners.

2. Bluehost: $2.95/mo

Bluehost’s Shared Plans

Bluehost is the name you’ll see most often in the search results when looking for affordable and reliable hosting for your website.

This company started offering web hosting plans in 1996 and over 20 years became one of the most trusted hosting providers that hosts over 2 million websites around the globe.

Bluehost’s Shared Plans 1-Year Pricing

Basic Plan

This budget-friendly plan for $2.95/mo offers pretty generous functionality:

  • 1 Website
  • 50 GB of SSD Storage
  • Unlimited Bandwidth
  • Free SSL Certificate

Plus Plan

If you want to run multiple sites then this plan is better because you get everything from Basic Plan and also everything unlimited:

  • Unlimited Websites
  • Unlimited Storage
  • Unlimited Domains
  • Unlimited Parked Domains
  • Unlimited Sub Domains

Choise Plus Plan

This plan is currently available for the same price as Plus Plan, but only for 1 year. After that period, it’s renewed for the regular price of $18.99/mo and get on top of everything from Plus Plan these additional features:

  • Domain Privacy
  • Access to Spam Experts
  • Site Backup

Domain Privacy is something I generally recommend, but I would not pay for it as it’s automatically available from some registrars, like my favorite Porkbun.

Regular site backups are a welcome and important feature to have in case you need to revert your blog and relaunch it from the last healthy backup.

Pro Plan

This plan is too expensive after the first year as it costs regularly $28.99/mo. For this price, you can get a professional managed hosting plan, albeit just for one website.

3. SiteGround: $6.99/mo

SiteGround’s Shared Plans

SiteGround is another web hosting company recommended by WordPress itself. It hosts almost 1.9 million blogs and websites worldwide.

Stellar Plan

The cheapest plan usually comes with only 1 website, but in case of Namecheap’s Stellar plan, you can host up to 3 website which is quite rare offer. On top of that, you’ll get:

  • 20 GB of SSD Storage
  • Unmetered Bandwidth

If you want to run more than 3 websites you should consider Stellar Plus plan that comes with:

  • Unlimited Websites
  • Unmetered SDD Storage
  • Unlimited Parked Domains with unlimited subdomains
  • Internal Backup twice a week + Autobackup

Stellar Business Plan

Strangely, Stellar Business plan offers 50 GB of SSD Storage which is less than unmetered storage that comes with cheaper Stellar Plus plan. It doesn’t seem to offer anything on top of Stellar Plus plan except for double the number of files, folders and emails you are allowed to store in your hosting account.

5. GoDaddy: $5.99/mo

GoDaddy’s Shared Plans

Bluehost is the name you’ll see most often in the search results when looking for affordable and reliable hosting for your website.

This company started offering web hosting plans in 1996 and over 20 years became one of the most trusted hosting providers that hosts over 2 million websites around the globe.

Maximum Plan

Maximum plan is the most expensive shared hosting plan GoDaddy offers. It comes with increased speed and even more websites, databases and storage capacity on top of what Ultimate plan offers:

  • Increased processing power and speed
  • 50 Websites
  • 200 GB of Storage
  • 100 databases

Running your website doesn’t have to be expensive and there are very capable hosting plans with affordable pricing you can choose from.

If you plan to start a blog and run just one website, I suggest you go with Bluehost’s Basic plan for $2.95/mo with 50 GB of storage.

If you need to run 3 websites, there’s no reason to pay for unlimited plans. Namecheap’s Stellar plan for $1.59/mo should be the best fit for you.

If you need more than 3 websites, storage will be an important factor and, in such case, I recommend Bluehost’s Plus plan with unlimited websites and storage for $5.45/mo.

Remember that these are just promotional prices for first-time contracts. Make sure to check the regular pricing after the renewal.
